about us

Mama Duck was founded on January 16, 2023, in Taylor, Texas, and is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Founded by a group of three mothers with children attending Taylor Independent School District who have witnessed the despair of students unable to participate in school activities due to financial constraints. We have also observed the generous efforts of teachers who use their own money to enable these students to participate. These experiences led us to realize the significant need in our district to support students in funding small educational experiences.

Mama Duck is committed to supporting educational opportunities. Our mission is to ensure that every student in our local school district has access to the same educational resources and opportunities. We strive to promote educational equity and remove the financial barriers that may hinder students from fully participating in their academic experience.

To achieve our mission, we are dedicated to raising funds to cover the costs of school events and educational materials. We firmly believe that every student deserves the opportunity to participate and achieve their full potential, and we will work tirelessly to make this a reality for all students in our community.

We recognize the vital role of education in shaping the future of our society, and we are committed to playing our part in creating a brighter future for our community. At Mama Duck, we will continue to advocate for educational equality and provide the necessary resources to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Our inspiration

Here are some examples of average costs:

  • School lunch: $2.65 - $3.19 per day ($0.40 if eligible for reduced price)
  • Elementary field trip: $10

  • Required t-shirt for field trips, band, or athletics: $15 each
  • Educational tool fees: $25
  • Yearbook: $70 in high school, $40 in middle school

  • Band instrument rental: $22-$48 per month
  • Cap and Gown: $24

These costs cumulatively contribute to the overall expense of a school year.

41%

Economically Disadvantaged

41% of our student body is considered economically disadvantaged.

Students facing economic disadvantages typically come from low-income families, which can introduce financial obstacles that hinder their education. They often encounter limited access to essential resources like textbooks, computers, and school supplies. Additionally, affording school-related expenses can be a significant challenge for them, leading to additional financial stressors. These factors can have a profound effect on their academic performance and overall well-being.

WHAT WE SUPPORT

School Events

Field Trips

Field trips broaden students' perspectives and develop their appreciation for the world by exposing them to new environments and experiences.

Dances

School dances allow students to socialize and develop social skills, build friendships, and feel more connected to their school community.

Fundraisers

Many fundraisers provide incentives or rewards for participants. Additionally, it's a common method for selling school spirit items or necessary field trip shirts.

Cap and Gown

Wearing a cap and gown is a long-standing tradition in graduation ceremonies, and it is a symbol of academic achievement and success. It is a way to commemorate the hard work and dedication that students have put into their education.

To be determined....

We will review requests for educational tools, such as books or laptop fees, submitted by school counselors and make decisions based on the needs of the students as they arise.

Lunch Debt

Clearing school lunch debt is a vital step toward ensuring that every child can focus on their education without the weight of unpaid lunch bills. It represents a small yet impactful gesture of support for families and the promotion of equality in our communities.

By eliminating lunch debt, we can help alleviate financial stress and create equal opportunities for all students to flourish.

Reading

"Read Quack Repeat" is Mama Duck's reading initiative, promoting literacy in our community year-round. We bring books to life through summer park pop-ups and Little Free Libraries, including one recently installed at Robinson Park. During the school year, we support teachers in building classroom libraries and enhance elementary libraries. Additionally, we've taken steps to eliminate student late book fees, ensuring that every child has the chance to explore new worlds through reading in their school environment.
